What was the name of that store on the Concourse where you ordered from a catalog and they retrieved it from the back? They sold everything from watches to furniture.

Hey Barbara.I use to prowl all Catskill and east of Hudson stores. That today is a dead business. The stuff never moves. The owners sit and read while you snoop. It's all out there on the net,but they will almost never come down more than 5%

That chain of catalog stores was called Service Merchandise. They were pretty common around the city. Lots of electronics and jewelry and small appliances. I got my first digital calculator there.

I can't imagine that Main Street in Hudson not doing well, business-wise. Not sure what's east of Hudson...but I like the town. Mostly antique shops. I don't remember antique shops in the Bronx.

Hey Barbara.Well actually Hudson is east of the Hudson. I went there many A time. Thing is"kids" today have no use for "old stuff".If they can see it on their phone, that's good enough. The stuff just sits and doesn't sell anymore, trust me I have A TON of it.I started with clocks.Go look on goodwill, and to boot they won't even wind and check.Old furniture (unless a classic name) is just junk .I still gp on the hunt. But these days it's just Estate and garage sales.Be well
