JFK in the Bronx

Many of us know that our 35th president, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, lived in the Bronx and attended school there in Riverdale. My question is, why wasn't this a well-known and popular fact about him and the Bronx? My teachers in junior high and high school never mentioned this. I wonder if they even knew.

I didn't know about that until about 20 years ago. And I'm pretty sure my parents voted for him.

JFK lived in Riverdale. I don't know anyone who lives in Riverdale thats admits to being from The Bronx.

You are so wrong. I grew up in the Bronx - first just Bronx, NY. Then Bx 68 NY, Then Bx NY 10463, Then Bx NY 10471. But all in all they are all 104. 104 is THE BRONX, no matter who thinks it isn't. I am still PROUD to say I'm fromTHE BRONX and I correct all who say otherwise. I think it is sad that just because the neighborhoods one grew up in no longer look the way they did back in the day, one should be ashamed.

Hi Ed. I've enjoyed your posts over the years, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I lived in Riverdale for 41 years and I am from The Bronx, not Riverdale, although in the building I lived in, I was the only one from The Bronx - everyone else in my building used Riverdale on their address labels LOL I am also a proud Hayesman, which for some reason I believe you might be too. Like Amaranita (whose posts I've also enjoyed), I lived in 10463. For those who don't know, the Kennedy's former house had been in disrepair for several years. Not sure what the status is now. Ed, thanks for all the great posts over the years and keep them coming..

I was a little taken aback when my mother once told someone she was from Westchester, not the Bronx. I am always proud to say The Bronx when the subject comes up here in New Mexico.

I believe that JFK made a campaign stop in front of Alexanders sometime before the 1960 election. I also remember that I was more impressed with Gabe Pressman than that other guy up there on the stand making a speech. I had no idea who JFK was, but I saw Gabe every night in glorious B&W on my TV. (Thank you Steve For reading my posts)

There was Riverdale and there was Bronx 63 and I grew up on Tyndall Avenue and 262nd Street which was “Riverdale†but as unassuming a Bronx neighborhood as there ever was, and my best buddy lived (gasp!) deep in the heart of “Riverdale-Fieldston†just off the highway at 246th street – “real†Riverdale. To those of us kids who went to Saint Margaret's and (later) Saint Gabriel’s and/or PS86, we knew who the hell we were and it didn’t matter then and it really doesn’t now. I’m 96 years old and all of my great old memories have dates on them but none seem to have zip codes.
