There was only one movie house in my neighborhood. It was called Cinelli's Savoy. It was located near Arthur Avenue in the Belmont section of the Bronx. Everyone called it "The Dumps". They would give away a free comic book to the first 100 customers. There also would be two figure movies and cartoons. You spent some 4 hours there. My mother would pack a lunch for me. The woman in the ticket booth would always ask your age. I don't know if it is there or not -- I doubt it.

The DEVON on East Tremont Avenue between the Concourse and Anthony Avenue was the closest to where I lived. I heard that Errol Flynn one time brought his date there to see one of his pictures. He was in New York, probably staying in Manhattan and wanted to go someplace where he wouldn't be easily recognized. Other theaters within walking distance were the CROTONA, DeLUXE, AVALON, TREMONT. PARADISE and the ASCOT (I never went there).

WKlatte, In the late 1950s I lived near the Devon ~AND~ It's likely my posting that you're referring to. It was 1958 and as we entered the Devon it was empty other than my friend and I and 'one other couple'. As we sidled to seats a row in front of the other couple ...I looked at them as the screen lighted up enough to see their faces and I was so surprised to see Errol Flynn and his 17 year old girlfriend Beverly Aadland! They were in the news every day and easy to recognize. It was a movie he was starring in late in his career, "Too Much Too Soon" and Beverly, I think, lived on Anthony Ave. which explains why they were in the Devon. And when the movie was over we all walked out onto Tremont Ave. and I ran right up to him so excited saying "Errol Flynn"! He looked at me with fear, grabbed Beverly and ran up to the Concourse, us following them....He flagged a cab, and they were gone.

Thanks for responding. I believe it WAS your posting about seeing Errol Flynn. I lived on Anthony Avenue for 15 years until 1955 and did not know Beverly. I wonder how E.F. ever managed to date a girl from the Bronx?

Hi WKlatte, I just searched it on the web and apparently she was a 15 year old dancer in Hollywood when Flynn noticed her and had a third party bring her to his office for a 'meeting'..and that's how it began. They were a couple for a year or two when he died. Her mother took her from Anthony Ave. out to Hollywood to try to 'make it' there and Her mother wrote a book about the whole affair.
