KEEPING YOUR APARTMENT COOL IN THE SUMMER Return to topicsPost to this topic

Being a child of the 1950s, I used to live at 181st St & VYSE AVE
[1951-1962]. The building I used to live was on the NW corner, it was a walk-up with an open staircase in the middle that you could look up and see the skylight at the roof, and was in the shape of a "H"
Our apartment had cross-ventilation, meaning it had windows on two sides of the building, breezes use to blow through one window facing the street and out through one facing the back of the building.
Tenants use to keep their windows and doors open [doors open which meant you could see inside their apartments, a breeze would enter one apartment, go through the hallway, and go out through the open door and windows of the other apartment on the other side of the building.

I never understood why curtains would blow out of the window.
