My apartment building was on 178th street near Southern Blvd and Bronx Park. When I returned to the Bronx for a visit to Bronx Park, circa 1980, the building was a pile of rubble (brick pyramid). I could not even get near it and had to view it from 180th street. Indeed most of the other buildings in that whole area were demolished. It felt like a photo out of a book that I had taken out of the library on the allied bombings of German cities in WWII. What an eye opener!! I'm assuming other areas of the Bronx were in the same condition and are now cleaned up?

My response to this was rejected and I don't know why.

Yes, 555 Cauldwell Avenue still exists, as does the building North of it. But the building South of it is long gone. I Think it burned in the 70's.

No. They built a middle school and tore down the buildings (two buildings attached) on West Tremont and what was Davidson Avenue

The 60s building is still standing but the 50s building is gone. Some of it is buried under the Cross Bronx X-way that demolished the buildings, friendships and neighborhoods in it's path. The irony is that it's often easier and faster to cross the Bronx using it's streets rather than the mess that is the Cross-Bronx.

My old building on Clay Ave is (barely) still standing. I went to visit a year ago and the whole street looked pretty shabby. Same goes for PS 53. I think the city took over the building and broke up the apartments into smaller units. A lot of the stoops are gone too.

My whole block on Clay Avenue from 169th to 168th is still there. Does not look as good as it did back then, for sure.

Yes 1934 Harrison Ave is still standing. Now owned and operated by Housing Preservation Department it underwent a total renovation back in 1984 which included the installation of an elevator. Back in 84 while passing through I was able to convince the security guard to allow me to enter the building while under renovation with every floor gutted. I was jealous that there wasn't an elevator when I lived there on the 5th floor of a 5 story walk up, lol.

A little further than we usually hung out....I lived at 1276 which is right at 169th St. There was a drug store right there on the corner of 167th and Clay, wasn't there? I seem to remember we would go there to buy cheap perfume for Mother's Day etc. (All we could afford). Of course, we hung out at the 168th St steps and burned Christmas Trees there when everyone threw them out after Christmas.

Ours was a 2 family home that was built in the early 1900's. My grandfather bought it. I see current pictures that show this home and all the homes on the street are still being maintained very well.

Shalom Alvin, Robert Moses took care of my building's destruction to make way for the Cross Bronx Expressway. When I visited the old neighborhood at about the same time (80s), I saw the same disheartening piles of bricks and broken stairways as you. When I visited again a few years ago, buildings were in fact in good repair. Charlie

Did you know anyone on the other of Harrison (and Tremont)....i.e. The Kelly brothers...also I knew Kenneth. Fine from Harrison and Alexandria Netwosky (spelling is a guess for her last name) I read about her.........she was typical asperberger's - brilliant........we were friends and in Mr. Heller's class at 26. I still remember that she was way smarter then the teacher....he realized that too.

My grandmother lived around the corner from you at 110 Mt Hope Place. Her building is still standing too but now it has huge and hideous bars up front and looks like a prison.
