My mother was late getting me to my new school, St. Brendan's First Grade Class.
We walked in the classroom, my hand clenched to my mom as all the kids stood staring! The nun introduced me to the class, and directed me to take my seat. My mom let go of my hand, and turned to leave. I started crying & ran to her wanting to go back home. As she tried to calm me down, the nun directed her to place me in the crib that was just inside the door. I looked at the crib, then turned to the kids staring at me like deer in the headlights. No doubt they were silently contemplating my next move! My crying turned to a soft pout as I reluctantly took my seat, my mom gone before I could even turn to say goodbye. I was not in my seat long before the last new student would enter with his mom. This kid was howling more than me. I watched in awe to see what his fate would be. He ended up in the crib! I anxiously waited to see what would be next, as his mom, coached by the nun, explained he could stay in the crib, or go to his seat! After brief contemplation, he went to his seat, the last student in! The nun closed the door right after his mom left. Looking back at that time, I could never have fathomed what my next eight years of grade school would be like!
